Students at South Bank Colleges recently put their problem-solving skills to the test by taking part in the MEI Further Education Maths Challenge, a national competition designed to build confidence and engagement in post-16 maths.
Held at London South Bank Technical College's Nine Elms campus, the challenge brought together learners working towards Functional Skills or GCSE Maths in a lively, team-based competition. Using interactive activities such as Kahoot quizzes and Tarsia puzzles, students were encouraged to think quickly, collaborate closely and apply their maths knowledge in a fun, supportive environment. The atmosphere in the room was focused but upbeat, with plenty of friendly competition and shared problem-solving along the way.

The MEI Further Education Maths Challenge is a national initiative involving more than 90 colleges each year, with thousands of students taking part across the country. College-level rounds lead on to Regional Finals and, for the strongest teams, a National Final. As well as testing mathematical understanding, the challenge is designed to boost confidence, teamwork and students’ belief in their own abilities, particularly for those who may not always see maths as their strongest subject.
At London South Bank Technical College, the session was led by Maths lecturer Noochin Chamsozoha, who emphasised how valuable these experiences can be for learners. By presenting maths through games and group challenges, students are able to engage with the subject in a different way, building confidence and resilience alongside their technical skills.
Following strong performances on the day, the winning team from Nine Elms will now go on to represent the college at the Regional Final later in February. The college wishes them every success as they take the next step in this national competition and continue to show what can be achieved when maths, teamwork and confidence come together.
